Samsung T7 Touch Portable

The new futuristic Samsung T7 Touch SSD can be considered a real evolution, compared to its predecessor. Why?

Due to the fact that the speed has been doubled, in comparison to T5 model, and the introduction of the fingerprint sensor to better safeguard personal data.

The Samsung T7 Touch is a tiny Solid-State-Drive (SSD), weighing just 58 grams and is a perfect companion device on-the-go.

What sets it apart from all past T-lineup models is the NVME controller installed directly inside the SSD, which is not the case with the T5 model.

The biggest trouble of the T5 was the SATA III, responsible for continuous bottlenecks in data transfer.

As we will see in this review, the Samsung T7 Touch Portable SSD model is a professional and high-tech product, but according to us, not suitable for end-users who transfer regularly a high amount of data.

Below, we reported the main specs about the Samsung T7 Touch Portable SSD:

Samsung T7 Touch SSD: Product Overview

Box Content

First things first: Let’s see what’s inside the box:

  • Samsung T7 Touch SSD
  • USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable
  • USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable
  • Password-Software for fingerprint sensor configuration

Interestingly enough, the provided USB cables are 15-22 cm (6-9 inches) longer than the regular USB cables provided with other SSDs on the market. The length of each USB Type-C cable is 45 cm (18 inches).

The SSD from the outside looks great. As you can see from the picture below, the portable SSD T7 is small in size and fits perfectly inside the palm of a hand.

Samsung T7 Touch Portable SSD

Embedded inside an aluminum unibody design, it’s thinner but a bit taller than his predecessor.

Storage capacity

The available storage capacities are 500 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB. Please be informed that the available amount in Windows is less since it uses Gibibytes and not Gigabytes (1024 MB instead of 1000 MB).

Technical details

Real-world transfer speed

The Samsung T7 Touch supports USB 3.2 Gen 2, which means the maximum theoritical transfer speed is 10 GB/s.

In sequential reading the transfer speed is up to 1050 MB/s, while the sequential writing speed is up to 1000 MB/s.

Officially, the max port USB speed is 1250 MB/s but the T7 model arrives at 1050 MB/s.

The transfer speed depends also from the device it is connected to. For example, if your desktop computer or laptop is equipped with USB Ports 2.0, the realistic maximum transfer speed will be around 30-40 MB/s, even if your SSD support the USB Protocol 3.2 Gen 2.

That said, before purchasing the SSD, we recommend to check first the USB ports of the device that will be connected it.

One common issue of the T7 model is that large sustained transfer may induce throttling. Therefore, it’s advisable to transfer small chunks of data and not the entire content at once.

Fingerprint sensor

The big sensation of the Samsung T7 Touch Portable SSD is the fingerprint sensor. The encouraging news is, that once installed the password-software, it can be used also with other computers and the SSD will work straightaway, even if fingerprint authentication is enabled. No need to enter the admin password (what is likely to happen with other SSDs).

You can store up to 4 fingerprints. The encryption takes place by using AES 256-bit encryption.

The installation time is fast too: just 2-3 minutes.

A nice thing: Around the fingerprint, there is a led-ring that becomes blue in case of confirmation and blinks clockwise when the SSD is processing data.

External case

Reinforced with an inner frame, it’s sturdy and according to Samsung, it withstands drops of up to 2 meters (6.6 feet).

Product Comparison

T5 vs T7

Similar as they might look, the T7 Touch NVME Solid-State-Drive amounts to a huge boost in transfer speeds compared to the SATA drive installed in the T5. In addition to the fingerprint sensor, the T7 is way faster in providing snappy data retrieval.

The T7 is double as fast as its predecessor but costs more. The biggest difference is that for the very first time, inside an SSD is installed a PCIe NVME flash storage.

Weight-wise, the difference is just 7 grams.

The SSD, according to Samsung, is up to 9.5 times faster than standard HDDs. Furthermore, SSDs are much more robust.

One of the biggest differences between is SSDs and HDDs consists in the way data is processed: HDDs use mechanical parts and data is written physically, while inside SSDs data transfer is 100% digital. For the latter reason, it’s faster, more reliable and durable than hard disks.

On the downside, the SSDs are 20-30% more expensive and have lower storage capacities.

What users have to say about Samsung T7 Touch Portable SSD:

Best SSD, compact size, superfast lightning speed, lightweight, fingerprint security, highly secure, compatible with android, mac, windows. Welcome to the future of super-smart drives.
  • AES 256-Encryption
  • Built-in fingerprint scanner
  • 18″ USB cables
  • No IP Rating

With the introduction on the market of Samsung T7 Portable SSD, we can say for sure that the future is bright. The T7 is fast, tiny and data ist safer, thanks to the fingerprint sensor and password-protection system.

The sleek design is easy on the eyes, too.

The T7 is a professional product and worth the purchase if you care about data safety and speed. On the other hand, we recommend opting for the T5 model, if you don’t require the fingerprint sensor and you can live with lower transfer speed.
